HAYLEY LYLA LAUNCHES SUSTAINABLE FACE WEAR CAPSULE COLLECTION

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Hong Kong, Dec 30, 2020 - Creation of Hayley's Fashionable & Sustainable Face Wear Capsule Collection

"Wear a mask"- a phrase that has increasingly become the initial greeting in the wake of a global pandemic. The act of grabbing a mask on our way out the front door only highlights how exhausting it is to navigate the outside world; in our struggle to stick to this new normal, Hayley Lyla sets herself apart with her creation vintage silk masks. Hayley recognised the public's urge not only to pair fashionable face wear with everyday outfits but the need to stay safe. Her goal was to promote masks as comfort items to enhance the wearer's fashion instead of seeing them as a painful endeavour.

The Capsule Collection - Made by vintage Hong Kong manufactured pure silk back in the 1950s

An essential consideration towards mask construction is hydrophobicity- a material's ability to block droplets and prevent viral particles from being absorbed and the ability to remain comfortable and easily reusable. Silk stands apart from other materials (i.e. cotton, polyester) because it is naturally water repellant and antiviral/antibacterial properties. Research on silk as mask fabric further reveals that it has an excellent filtration system, enhanced with each additional layer. Hayley's masks are lovingly crafted with rare traditional silk, and focus on the fabric's breathability, preventing the wearer's skin from irritation and condensation.

Apart from premium quality silk, Hayley chooses different fabric patterns by hand to ensure that the masks complement the wearer's everyday outfits. Hayley reinvents the traditional practices of Chinese creatures and flowers with vibrant colours- these masks are incredibly unique and will escalate your style.

Hayley Lyla, Creative Director, says:

Embrace the new normal. Since we're going to be wearing masks for a while, so we might as well get one to last instead of contributing to even more waste from disposable and poorly made covers, right?

Meaning Behind these Masks

Every mask that Hayley creates is more than just a fashion statement; they are the remaining fruits of labour from the old Hong Kong manufacturing industry, which started in the 19th century after the Taiping Rebellion. However, the massive strides in socioeconomics throughout these years made mainland China the primary source of fabric in the industry, overtaking Hong Kong fabric mills and causing them to fade out of existence eventually. To tell the story of this dying industry, Hayley decided to source her fabric from one of the last silk fabric mills, already closed down but left with Hong Kong made pure silk deadstock, making each mask more valuable and memorable.

Each fabric tells a Story.

It is inevitable, as long as technology advances, our traditional cultures will be left behind and forgotten; we as the younger generations tend to unconsciously shed our old customs and beliefs, which is why each mask should regard with importance. The particular fabric sings a traditional story embedded within Hong Kong Chinese cultures, like the embroidered plum blossom (梅花) flowers. Exclusively the national flower of China, its depiction in Chinese art and poetry only emphasises its extraordinary beauty amid winter. Another instance of how Chinese tradition was represented in the present is the auspicious mythical creature of the Chinese dragon; the dragon carries a symbol of power, strength, and good luck in East Asian culture worthy of the dragon's respect. By choosing various traditional patterns to suit each of Hayley's masks, we weave Chinese traditions into each signature flower and legendary creature, bringing back culture into contemporary Hong Kong.

Each and every Hayley masks are handmade by our master tailors in Hayley’s Hong Kong design studio.
